With the release of Cinderella next month, I thought I would do a post about the costumes as they are absolutely wonderful! The film looks absolutely beautiful with Lily James as Ella and Richard Madden as prince charming. I’m so excited for the release of the film, to experience the magic of the story come alive! Here is a trailer for the film Cinderella’s rag dress – “I didn’t want her in rags, as she is often portrayed in the storybooks. What I gave her instead is a dress that starts out pretty and ends up looking faded, tired, and worn out.” – Sandy Powell Cinderella’s dress is light ice blue with little pink flowers all over the bodice, with stand-up frilled neckline; the front of the dress is gathered around the bust and then is more fitted around her waist and underneath her bust and into a pointed bodice. The dress has 3/4 length sleeves that are slightly rolled at the edges. The skirt is gathered around the top but it appears to be 5cm into the skirt which allows the skirt to fall gently over the hips. The flowers on her skirt of her dress start of small but towards the bottom skirt the larger the flowers are and the along the bottom edge has a small hem. Cinderella also has a little bow tied head band of white muslin to show that she works very hard, she also has blue fabric ballet pumps that are slightly darker blue but also look slightly more grey and they have a little bow. Ball Gown ! Cinderella’s dress is absolutely stunning! I am especially looking forward to this point in the film as I know that it will be breathtakingly beautiful as her dress transforms! The voluminous large skirt of her ball gown dress appears to be composed of many light layers of fabric such as crepeline silk, printed polyester, and iridescent nylon in different shades of blue and turquoise that sparkle over a petticoat. Her dress glides across the floor beautifully and instantly captures your attention and you can’t help but follow her through her story. The top of the dress has blue crepeline silk attached the corset bodice in the centre of the bust with a little iredescent embroidery butterfly and the fabric drapes around her shoulders and forms a point at the back of the bodice; there are lots of butterflies around this and to me it shows the kindness of Ella (Cinderella) and that the butterflies take comfort to her dress. Watercolour costume design of Cinderella’s ball gown – Sandy Powell “I wanted to make the gown look enormous,” she says. “The gown had to look lovely when she dances and runs away from the ball. I wanted her to look like she was floating, like a watercolor painting.” – Sandy Powell Finally, her Swarovski crystal slippers! What every little girl associates with Cinderella and wants to own ! They are so magical and enchanting and I love how they have butterflies on as well at the top of her dress. Ahh my excitement for this film is building every day and I’m going to be drawn to the cinema screen! This trailer goes behind the love story of Cinderella and the prince and allows you to understand the characters further. But will Lady Tremaine (evil stepmother – Cate Blanchett) and stepsisters prevent her from seeing the Prince Charming? Her stepsisters dresses are very bright! Drizella’s (Sophie McShera) white lace collar dress is mainly yellow with pink and Anastasia’s (Holliday Grainger) white lace collar dress is mainly pink with yellow and white flowers, the colours yellow and pink were also used in original Cinderella film for the stepsisters. The floral print is very bold and almost a bit too much but I like how Sandy Powell has given them over the top dresses as it suggests that they mean as they have to compensate by wearing bold clothes. Also, they have the completely opposite dresses to Cinderella as her daily dress is pale. They have short puff sleeves that are gathered at the top of the sleeve; black trim around the hem of the bottom of the sleeve that has a white frilly edge. Both dress have black belts that are worn at natural waist – they have a circle buckle with white decorative pattern (almost looks like lace), to me this looks like a white ornate oval mirror which could also suggest their vain crual personalites. Ahh I’m so excited for this film to come to cinema next month – it’s going to be a trully wonderful experience!
